Locals of Liran Island Can Now Enjoy Telecommunications Services

Inauguration of Telkomsel´s Base Transceiver Station (BTS) in Ustutun Village, Liran Island, Maluku Barat Daya Regency, by SOE Minister Rini M. Soemarno accompanied by President Director of Telkom Alex J. Sinaga, Monday (7/8). The available telecommunications network in Liran Island is expected to enable the locals to communicate easier and accelerate the local economic growth.

Jakarta, August 7, 2017 - State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) Minister Rini Soemarno and the President Director of PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (Telkom) Alex J. Sinaga, Regent of Maluku Barat Daya Barnabas Orno, and Commander of Military Area XVI (Pangdam XVI) /Pattimura Maj. Gen. Doni Monardo, have inaugurated the operations of Base Transceiver Station (BTS) of Telkomsel, Telkom’s subsidiary, in Ustutun Village, Liran Island, Maluku Barat Daya Regency in a work visit of SOE Minister to Liran Island, Monday (7/8).

Located in the north of Timor Leste, Liran Island is one of the remote islands in Indonesia. The island is a part of Maluku Barat Daya regency, Maluku Province. For the whole time, locals of Liran Island could only enjoy Telkomsel’s telecommunications networks services with international roaming tariff. Therefore, the operations of the first BTS on the island with 1,118 people population show that SOEs, particularly TelkomGroup, care for the nation. The BTS inauguration is an effort to open telecommunications access for the locals who live on remote islands.

In the work visit, SOE Minister Rini M. Soemarno and President Directors of SOEs in Maluku Barat Daya Regency, said that the presence of SOEs in Maluku Barat Daya Regency shape the commitment of SOEs in accomplishing the nine goals (Nawacita) of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla administration, especially in encouraging the development and improvement of remote islands.

On Sunday (6/8), Minister Rini also inaugurated Broadband Learning Center (BLC) and Digital Library (PaDi) built by Telkom in SMP PGRI Moa junior high school, Moa Island. At the same time, Minister Rini had a dialogue with some students and tried to access and use PaDi application. She asked the student to use BLC and PaDi facilities optimally.

"Through BLC, students in Liran Island can study by using the internet optimally to broaden their knowledge. Besides that, the students can access books, study journals, and the other sources of knowledge virtually via PaDi. Use the digital reading facilities. By reading more, all of us Indonesian national can glorious and take over the world," Rini said.

Meanwhile, Alex J. Sinaga hopes the telecommunications access in Liran Island could accelerate the local economic growth. "According to the research result of World Bank in 2015, the growth of 10% internet access in a country can improve the economy by 1.35%. Therefore, the presence of Telkomsel network could make the communications between Indonesia people from one island to another island are expected to go well. We also expect that the presence of TelkomGroup in Maluku Barat Daya Regency could improve the economy level of the locals," Alex said.

Besides inaugurating BLC and BTS in Liran Island, the SOE Minister also provided assistance for the renovation of church and schools, school equipment, village transportation car and agricultural products, residential area renovation, locals’ house electrification, street lamps installation, drilled well and public restrooms development, and teachers’ residential area rehabilitation.

The SOEs involved in the activity are Telkom, BNI, BRI, BTN, Bank Mandiri, Jasa Raharja, Kimia Farma, Pertamina, PLN, and Taspen. The development in Liran Island is also expected to proceed optimally with the support of SOEs in transportation and logistics sector, which are PT Pos Indonesia, Pelni and ASDP. All of the development efforts is a form of SOEs presence for the nation.
