Chinese Cannon Malfuntions, Kills Four Soldiers

JAKARTA, GRES.NEWS – A fatal accident has occurred in a military exercise in Natuna, Riau Archipelago, that involved the Indonesian National Army (TNI)’s Quick Response Team (PPRC). Army spokesperson Col. Alfret Denny Tuejeh said the accident occurred after a cannon – made in China – that belonged to Air Defense Artillery 1/K malfunctioned.

"One of the Giant Bow cannons that belonged to the Air Defense Artillery 1/K malfunctioned upon firing, on the elevation delimiter in particular. It went out of control and killed four soldiers and wounded eight others," Denny said, Wednesday (17/5).

The accident occurred at 11.21 West Indonesia Time (WIB). The victims were rushed to the nearest hospital.

Meanwhile, the army is now investigating the incident. The peak of the exercise was scheduled to be held on Friday, 19 May.

"Leaders of the Indonesian Army would like to say their deepest condolences for the death of our soldiers in the accident in Natuna," Denny said. (dtc/mag)
