Jokowi: We Only Block Telegram

JAKARTA, GRES.NEWS – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) ensures that the government only blocks Telegram and they’re not blocking the other social media. Jokowi delivered the statement after a rumor about all social media would be blocked got spread.

Following up the government’s decision to block Telegram messaging app because the app is allegedly used by terrorist and radical groups to communicate and spread their teachings.

"No, it’s not true (that the other social media would be blocked). No," Jokowi said firmly to reporters after he inaugurated Bela Negara (State Defense) Academy in Pancoran, South Jakarta, Sunday (16/7).

Jokowi stated that the government made the decision to block Telegram in Indonesia after they looked into the app, and they found that many people use Telegram as a communication medium for groups or individuals that are suspected of threatening the state, such as terrorists.

"We’ve been looking on it for quite long. Our decision is for the security of the state and people. Therefore, we have to make the decision. There are not just one, two, three, four, or five (groups). There are thousands of groups there (Telegram) that are categorized as a threat to the state security, and they could threaten people’s security," he said.

The President said there are still many social media apps that can be used by people to communicate. "We see there are still many other apps that can be used," he said.(dtc/rm)
