JAKARTA, GRES.NEWS – Not long after he recommends the House to limit the power of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and attracts people’s criticism, Attorney General Prasetyo comes up with another statement that’s considered contrary to his previous action. He asserts that the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is the main supporter of KPK.

According to Prasetyo, the AGO has sent the best prosecutors to assist KPK, and it proves that the AGO supports KPK. "I said that the AGO is the main supporter of KPK for the whole time. There are many chosen prosecutors to assist them in serving their duty," Prasetyo said in his office, Jalan Sultan Hasanuddin, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, Thursday (14/9).

Prasetyo said that the AGO will do everything to support the performance of KPK, including sending the best prosecutors for KPK. "We’re doing everything for KPK. Although we need many prosecutors, KPK also need them, we send our prosecutors there," he said.

Prasetyo’s statement about KPK has attracted the public’s attention. In a hearing with the House’s Commission III, Prasetyo said that the AGO has a limited power to handle corruption cases. He compared the power of AGO in Indonesia and other countries like Singapore and Malaysia that’s considered more effective and efficient.

"Attorney General is the highest public prosecutor. However, it’s not fully valid in the Law on KPK. In Singapore and Malaysia, institutions don’t compete and topple each other," Prasetyo said at the Parliament Building.

Besides that, the Attorney General once criticized KPK’s catch-in-the-act operation (OTT). He considered that OTT triggers a controversy. However, his statement was responded by the Deputy Chairman of KPK, Saut Situmorang. According to Saut, the controversy about OTT is a consequence. Saut said it triggers a controversy as the ones who got captured in their operation are mostly state officials. (dtc/mag)
