JAKARTA, GRES.NEWS – The High Court of Bandung, led by judge M Sapto, on Tuesday (Nov.14) has sentenced Buni Yani to 1 year and 6 months in prison for violating the Law on Electronic Information and Transactions (UU ITE) after he uploaded former Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok)’s speech.
The panel of judges ruled that Buni violated the law for uploading the video onto his Facebook wall without permission from the Jakarta Public Communication and Information Office. He then uploaded the same video onto YouTube, on 27 September 2016.
Buni, the judges said, watched the video, which became a major factor behind Ahok’s ousting, but did not attempt to find out whether the content was true.
Meanwhile, prosecutors sought 2 years and a Rp100 million fine.
They argued that Buni altered the content by erasing the word ‘use’, which changed the meaning of Ahok’s statement and spread content that would generate ethnic, religious, racial or societal groups (SARA) related hate.
Buni has said he will lodge an appeal. (dtc/rm)
