JAKARTA, GRES.NEWS – The House of Representatives challenges the government’s idea to let foreign organizations run airports and ports in Indonesia. House members fear that such move would make Indonesia lose control over the quarantine unit.

"If we handover airports and ports to foreign organizations we may lose quarantine control and this would be risky for the country, for instance, illegal agricultural products carrying pests or diseases may enter Indonesia easily," said Hermanto, a House of Representatives Commission IV member, Jakarta, Thursday (Nov.16).

Hermanto fears that the pests or diseases would affect the country’s soil, plants or animals.

The PKS (Welfare Justice Party) politician said quarantine units at airports and ports hold a crucial role as ‘forts’ to prevent illegal agricultural products from entering the country, especially those carrying pests and diseases.

"Never handover handover our forts to foreign parties," he said. (rm)
