JAKARTA, GRES.NEWS – The government is building three new dams in Sumbawa Island, Nusa Tenggara Barat, i.e. the Tanju Dam and Mila Dam in Dompu Regency, and the Bintang Bano Dam in Sumbawa Barat Regency.

The dams will boost paddy production in Sumbawa Island, from 3-4 tons/hectare to 5-6 tons/hectare for conventional paddy crops and to 8-10 tons/hectare for paddy cultivated through the SRI (System of Rice Intensification).

The constructions are being overseen by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing and is part of the government’s program to build 65 dams in 2015-2019.

The dams are targeted to be built late 2018. "Therefore, the dams will be filled with water and present their benefits early 2019," said Basuki, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing, last week, quoted by pu.go.id.

The dams are multiyear projects extending from 2013 to 2018 and will cost Rp348.5 billion (US$24,395,000) to complete.

Meanwhile, the contractor building said dams is PT. Nindya Karya. (rm)
