JAKARTA, GRES.NEWS – The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained Kalimantan Selatan regent Abdul Latif.

Latif was seen leaving the anti-bribery body wearing the orange detainment vest at 15.54 Jakarta Time, Friday (Jan.1) . "I pray for justice," he said while entering KPK’s detainee van.

Latif was arrested in a break-in operation by KPK on Thursday (4/1) along with six other people. In the operation, the law enforcers confiscated money in the rupiah and US dollar.

"We are still counting the money. Some are in the rupiah while some are in the US dollar. Bank notes have also been found, which we suspect were part of the bribery," said Febri Diansyah, Director of Public Relations Bureau, KPK.

The bribery was related with the construction of the Damanhuri Hospital in Kalimantan Selatan. KPK suspects the bribe money was commitment fee worth Rp3.6 billion (US$268,560) requested by Abdul Latif.

"We suspect it was commitment fee in relation to the construction project that was worth 7.5 percent or Rp3.6 billion," said Agus Rahardjo, Chairman, KPK, Friday (5/1).

Meanwhile, the other people arrested in the break-in operation included Abdul Latif, regent of Hulu Tengah Sungai (Kalimantan Selatan); Fauzan Rifani, chairman of Hulu Tengah Sungai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin); Abdul Basit, Director of PT Sugriwa Agung, and Donny Witono President Director of PT Menara.

Fauzan was allegedly the briber while Donny was allegedly the recipient.

Interestingly, Latif was arrested for corruption in the Past. " Abdul Latif was arrested and convicted for corruption in 2005-2006 in the SMAN 1 Labuan Amas Utara senior high-school project, which cost Rp711,880,000,"

He was the private contractor. He did not intend to finish the construction and this caused financial damage to the government.

After released from prison, Latif ran for Kalimantan Selatan House of Regional Representative (DPRD) for the 2014-2019 period. He was elected. A year later, he ran for regent.

"Abdul Latif became regent of Hulu Sungai Tengah for the 2016-2021 period," Agus said. (dtc/mfb)
