JAKARTA, GRES.NEWS – The situation within the Golkar Party has not cooled down even though its internal power struggle has concluded. Setya Novanto, the newly elected chairman, has included former convicts and one of its politicians who evidently committed adultery, in his list of proposed administrators.

The former convict in question is Fahd El Fouz Arafiq. Arafiq was jailed for committing corruption in a project to purchase holy Qurans when he acted as the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Meanwhile, Yahya Zaini was forced to step down from his position as an administrator at the party after a video revealing his sexual intercourse with dangdut singer Eva Maria was exposed to the public. Yahya was head of Legislative Relations and Political Institutions.

But the most controversial may be the inclusion of Sigit Haryo Wibisono. Sigit was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for his involvement in the murder of PT Rajawali Putra Banjaran President Director Nasrudin Zulkarnain. Sigit was only freed on 6 September 2015.

A Golkar Party politician Mahyudin warns Setya that names like Yahya Zaini will create an uproar within the party and prompt some cadres to move to another political party.

"I hope Central Executive Board members can accommodate all parties as there are worries that some cadres will jump to another party. Mr. Novanto must act wisely and not only accommodate his own group," said Mahyudin, Thursday (26/5).

Another party member, Yorrys Raweyai, added that Golkar administrators must never be morally defected. "We have a principal, Golkar leaders must reflect new faces, new generation, who represent a clean image, especially when it comes to moral," he said, Thursday (26/5).

The list is not final and is only one version from the many that have been circulated. Furthermore, the new administrators will only be announced on 2 June 2016, at the party’s executive meeting, Yorrys further explained.

Meanwhile, a political expert from Universitas Paramadina, Hendri Satrio, said the proposal of the controversial names shows that the Golkar Party is increasingly pragmatic. He predicts the popularity of Golkar will slump.

"The Golkar has been so focused on power while neglecting clean politics," said Hendri Satrio, a political expert from Universitas Paramadina Hendri Satrio, Thursday (26/5). (dtc)
